Young people get a taste of careers in hospitality
Highland Coast Hotels have four unique hotels on the North Coast 500 in Scotland. Their Kylesku Hotel has recently signed up to the Young Person’s Guarantee. The hotel team are passionate about the hospitality industry, and the exciting careers it can offer. They are encouraging local young people to come and try a range of training and work placements at the hotel. These experiences are very useful as a basis for further or higher education, or for job applications.
Working with Ullapool High School, pupils have been able to gain insights into all aspects of hotel life. This includes front of house, kitchen, serving and housekeeping. For senior students, they offer tailored work experience, which can be full or part time.
Earlier this year, Kyleksu Hotel attended a careers fair at Ullapool High School where they spoke to more than 200 students from S1-S6.
While there, the hotel team arranged with the DYW School Co-ordinator for the 12 students studying hospitality to visit the hotel.
I would encourage other employers to offer local young people the opportunity to excel in businesses nearer to where they live.
This allowed them to see the hotel and the workers in action. This gave the students real and relevant experience before applying to college to study hospitality full time.
As well as supporting young people, the hotel invests in skills by offering regular staff training and accredited courses. Regular in-service training includes Health and Safety and food. Students on work experience placements also gain the benefits of this training.
Highland Coast Hotels will continue to offer work experience, jobs and apprenticeships to young people as they expand in the area.
