Young people crucial to hotel success
The Macdonald Inchyra Hotel and Spa signed up to the Young Person’s Guarantee in July 2021. Engaging with young people is a key priority for the General Manager, Brett Ingle, and his team.
Brett wanted to engage more with local schools and colleges, to raise awareness of the many careers in hospitality, and find a wider talent pool.
Falkirk-based Brett planned to access funding for career-specific training academies for young people. These would be managed by the hotel, so that they could hire and train staff more quickly, as there were skills shortages in the area. He has joined the DYW Forth Valley board.
The commitment to developing young people at the Macdonald Inchyra Hotel & Spa begins while they are in school. The hotel offers many opportunities for pupils to learn more about the industry, careers and the skills they would need to be a success.
This engagement supports pupils within mainstream and additional support needs schools. It includes work tasters and experience, career insight and skills programmes. The hotel also arranges bespoke hospitality partnership programmes.
The hotel has increased its work with young people over the years, now having active DYW partnerships in 6 of the 10 local secondary schools. They also work closely with Forth Valley College.
Pupils in the senior phase who are working towards a Foundation Apprenticeship in Hospitality study at the college.
If you aren’t sure what you want to do, you need to experience different opportunities and look at different things until you want to make a decision.
The team offer Career-long Professional Learning visits for educators and SDS careers advisers. This provides the information to help young people make informed choices about their future career paths. It also supports the promotion of the hospitality industry as a career.
The hotel also offers young people the opportunity to join them in post school programmes. These provide a structured development route into the world of work. Programmes include their Hospitality Academy, Apprenticeship Programme and the new SPA Academy.
Macdonald Inchyra is also planning a bar Academy (for existing employees). Working with SDS employer engagement, the hotel is also exploring how they can expand the academies to other hotels in the group.
The hotel has had great benefit from working alongside the community. They have direct access to a talent pool of young people to fill their future development opportunities and vacancies. The engagement with the DYW Regional Group and School Coordinator network has been a key part of this success.
Local employability partners and SDS have also supported business growth. They've accessed funding to develop post-school programmes.
